In a rural area about 25 miles Northeast of Louisville, KY is the Trimble County Generating Station. Owned by Louisville Gas and Electric, the Trimble County Generating Station houses a 760-megawatt coal-fired unit. This unit is referred to as TC2, and when the coal combusts it produces an ash. This ash is then pumped out into their bottom ash pond (BAP) where it is stored and mined out as needed.

The slopes on the BAP are made up of a native soil, sand, and gravel. The slopes are relatively steep with a 2:1 slope angle. One slope on the BAP failed and compromised the integrity of the entire BAP. Louisville Gas and Electric decide to re-grade the slope and install HPTRM. This solution provides stabilization and protection for the future. The Gripple Terra-Lock™ System was selected to secure the HPTRM to the slope. This allows vegetation to grow which helps provide stability.

The TL-400 was used with the TL-A3 and a 6 inch plastisol coated steel plate to provide the security and structure needed for the HPTRM to work effectively. Due to soil conditions and proper Gripple installation tools (GPD, Drive Rods, JackJaw®) the BA-3 was driven easily to its 6 foot depth, which allowed the anchor to provide the pullout resistance that was needed.

The ease of installation with the Gripple Terra‑Lock™ System allowed our crew to complete the slope repair faster without sacrificing performance. The system delivered the strength needed for long‑term stabilization while keeping the project on schedule.
