Richland County, South Carolina is home to Crane Creek which has many tributaries that feed into it. One of those tributaries is in Columbia, South Carolina and is suffering from severe erosion. The erosion is causing the bank walls of the tributary to fail and is compromising the integrity of the banks throughout the tributary. Another issue that is occurring due to the erosion is the property lines of the households that lie along the tributary are starting to disappear.

Richland County and the town of Columbia needed to find a solution to their situation and decided on installing a living wall along the banks. The living wall will allow vegetation to grow, which in hand would stabilize the banks. To form the living wall, the contractor used a heavy duty tubular netting filled with a seed blend. Once these were formed, they were stacked on top of one another and secured in place by using a Geo Grid and the Gripple Terra-Lock™ System. The Geo Grid was pinned back into the slopes using Terra-Lock™ ground anchor (TL-A2) as well as the TL-100. Using the Terra- Lock™ ground anchor, Terra-LockTM and Gripple’s proper installation tools (JackJaw®, Gas Powered Driver, Drive Rods), installation was a smooth process which produced exceptional results.

Securing the living wall system along this tributary could have been labor‑intensive, but the Gripple Terra‑Lock™ System made the process fast and efficient. With the proper installation tools, pinning the geogrid back into the slope was straightforward and saved our crew significant time while still delivering a stable, long‑term erosion solution.
